Combining language study with studies of other aspects of Chinese culture, this course provides students with firsthand experience of the development of contemporary China. The program includes field trips to points of historical interests and many cultural activities. Students learn through personal experience about the emergence of modern China and its changing culture.

Katrina “Kiki” Spiezio is a rising junior from Taunton, MA. With a declared Politics major and Studio Art and Poverty Studies minors, she has embraced the liberal arts at Washington and Lee University through a QuestBridge Match scholarship. Traveling to China this Spring Term with a Gilman Scholarship allows her to reconnect to her heritage, because she was adopted from China and has started studying the language just this year. On campus, Spiezio is a Bonner Scholar who has enjoyed living in the Global Service House and being involved in everything from Electronic Music Ensemble to Club Polo to Dance Company. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with friends, keeping up with social media, and going on new adventures.

“Traveling to China will inform my perceptions of the world in a way that nothing else can; hearing from others what my birth country is like cannot compare to experiencing it firsthand. I want China to be my first stop in a long series of traveling and studying abroad.”
